Transaction Models for Mobile Computing

Advances in wireless network technologies provide the basis for mobile computing. The wireless communication provides users with the ability to work while moving. However, mobile computing poses many constraints like frequent disconnections, low bandwidth and limited battery life, small memory etc. These constraints make mobile transaction processing environment different than centralize or distributed transaction processing. Current transaction technologies are based on reliable communication networks and are therefore, not suitable for mobile computing environment. This paper discusses how the mobile transactions are different than transactions in centralized or distributed databases. We summarise the proposed transaction models for mobile computing and discuss their merits and demerits.
